Newspaper article from the Langley Advance dated December 17, 1979 entitled: "Flicks, Blues win at Ringette." The article is about the match between the Langley Flicks and the Fort Langley Lions of the petite division, and the Langley Oddfellows and the Aldergrove Blues of the belle division, which took place at the Langley Civic Centre rink. The players chased around the rink "with their cut-off hockey sticks to pursue the black ring of ringette".
The Flicks won its game 5-4 against Fort Langley. Langley's Melody Brown scored three goals while F. Harvey led the scoring for the Fort Langley Lions with two goals.
The Blues beat the Oddfellows 7-4. Aldergrove's P. Macdonald put in six of the seven goals and Langley's Debbie Crawford put in three goals.
Keith Corney, President of the Langley Ringette Association is quoted as saying ringette is "the fastest growing sport in Canada. It's slowly coming west as over 100,000 players are found in Quebec and Ontario, while there are 20,000 players in Winnipeg alone."
The article goes on to explain what is ringette is, and talks about a ringette event scheduled for February 15th, when three special games will be held. The first match is between two petite squads and the second will be a match for tween ringette and peewee boys hockey teams. The final game is a celebrity-oriented match including Dave Pratt and Canuck hockey players who are on the reserve list. Other celebrities planned include the CTV hockey squad and local disc jockeys. 75% of the proceeds of the event will be donated to the Langley handicapped organization. 2,000 people are expected to attend the televised event.
In April, ringette national championships will be held in Ontario. The BC Ringette Association will be sending junior belle and belle players to be part of the province's all-star team.
