The article is about the new season of ringette taking place in Chilliwack and about the sport of ringette generally. The article explains that ringette has a ten year history with Chilliwack entering its third season of competitive play. Coach Mike McAstocker states that ringette "is one of the fastest-growing sports for girls in Chilliwack." He goes on to say that "many new teams are expected to sign up for the new season." Chilliwack's association includes teams for all ages groups from seven years to women over 30. Registration details are provided in the article. The article explains that ringette is a team-oriented sport played on ice that incorporates the concepts of many sports with several elements of its own. Title A name given to the resource True grit Description An account of the resource Langley Advance newspaper article written by Rick Rake published on December 10, 1980 entitled: "True grit." The article is the reporter's conversation with a ringette player about covering ringette in the newspaper. The report explains that they met a ringette player while covering a boxing competition at Aldergrove Senior Secondary school. When the topic arose of the reporter covering hockey games, the girl asked "what about ringette?". The reporter explained that he had rekindled his relationship with Langley Ringette president Mrs. Chenier and had an agreement that they would work 50-50 on ringette future public relations. He writes "in the past ringette has been a touchy subject - what kind of coverage did it really deserve?". The reporter then does a quick run down of ringette explaining that the sport was adopted from Ontario and is played primarily by females. Langley has 7 teams (98 girls) and have bright shiny black, red, and white jackets. Four games are played each Saturday morning at the Langley Civic Centre between 10:15am and 1:15pm in three divisions - Petites, Tweens, and Belles. There will be a rep tournament in Port Coquitlam over the Christmas break and then starting March 27 Langley will host the provincial ringette championships. The article is about the upcoming ringette season and takes the opportunity to explain what the sport is. "Ringette is a girls' winter sport similar to hockey, played with 16 member teams, but using am air-filled rubber ring, rather than a puck, and a stick without a blade." A registration sheet is quoted as saying that ringette "was uniquely designed for girls with their safety in mind." A three-minute buzzer is used for shift changes to ensure that all players get an equal chance on the ice. The article explains that the blue line rule cuts down on body contact and also eliminates single-handed efforts because a minimum of two passes are necessary in travelling the length of the ice. Equipment includes a C.S.A. approved helmet and mouthguard, any kind of gloves, a hockey stick minus the blade and skates. Face masks are recommended and are mandatory for all-star teams. The article explains that last year, 60 girls played ringette in Langley, with a larger number playing in Aldergrove. The Langley Ringette Association is planning to increase acceptance of the sport locally with a 'ringette day', where there will be coverage by cable television. The article is about registration for ringette and attracting more girls to the game. The article explains that the registration fee is set at $27, a little more than half the $45 charged last year. Last year's fee, which was considerably more than the previous year, resulted in a big drop in registrations. According to the article, registration will take place September 11th at the Langley Civic Arena and the Aldergrove Arena. The article explains what the sport is for the "uninitiated": "Ringette is a girls answers to boys' minor hockey. It is a Canadian game having been invented in 1965 by Sam Jacks, director of parks and recreation for North Bay, Ont." According to the B.C. Ringette Association, "ringette can be played on any outdoor or indoor rink on which hockey is played. It is a team sport consisting of 11 to 18 players on a team with six players on the ice at one time: two forwards, one centre, two defence and a goalie. The girls wear skates, must wear a helmet and mouth guard, must wear some form of glove, tight fitting slacks, and a warm sweater.
