In Belle "A", Langley beat North Shore Winter Club 8-4 in North Vancouver. Tara Mutter, Joanne Vinette, Cheryl Waines, and Sheri Aitken scored. In the Deb division, Langley lost to North West Vancouver. Adel Gerspacher, Shelley Harvey, Dawn Fisher, and Michell Johnson scored in the 7-4 loss for Langley. In Tween "A", the Langley Breakers beat Port Coquitlam 5-0 at the Langley Civic Centre. Leanne Taylor and G. Albertson scored the goals. Keith Sullivan began his involvement with ringette in Prince George in 1983 when his daughter began playing. Over the years, Keith has been an executive board member, a coach, a manager, an official, a fundraiser, and a driving force behind ringette in northern BC. In 1996, Keith was recognized with a City of Prince George Recreation Award of Merit and was inducted into the Ringette BC Hall of Fame. Over the years, he coached in many different events such as the Northern BC Winter Games, BC Winter Games and National Ringette Championships. In 2016, Keith even took a team from Prince George to play in Finland. In 2024, Keith received the Sport BC Presidents Award, honouring his outstanding volunteer contributions. The article is the reporter's conversation with a ringette player about covering ringette in the newspaper. The report explains that they met a ringette player while covering a boxing competition at Aldergrove Senior Secondary school. When the topic arose of the reporter covering hockey games, the girl asked "what about ringette?". The reporter explained that he had rekindled his relationship with Langley Ringette president Mrs. Chenier and had an agreement that they would work 50-50 on ringette future public relations. He writes "in the past ringette has been a touchy subject - what kind of coverage did it really deserve?". The reporter then does a quick run down of ringette explaining that the sport was adopted from Ontario and is played primarily by females. Langley has 7 teams (98 girls) and have bright shiny black, red, and white jackets. Four games are played each Saturday morning at the Langley Civic Centre between 10:15am and 1:15pm in three divisions - Petites, Tweens, and Belles. There will be a rep tournament in Port Coquitlam over the Christmas break and then starting March 27 Langley will host the provincial ringette championships. The article summarizes a ringette game between Squamish and an Abbotsford/Chilliwack team that was played on November 23. In the tween B game, Squamish beat Abbywack 5-1. According to Jack Baillie, a team spokesperson, "the Squamish girls were bigger, better skaters and more experienced in the skills of ringette." Title A name given to the resource Sports group charges power politics Description An account of the resource Article published in the Aldergrove Star newspaper on December 19, 1973 entitled "Sports group charges power politics." The article is about a meeting held at the Langley municipal arena attended by about 70 parents of young girls, who met to seek clarification from recreational officials. Some of the questions included: "why hasn't a time schedule been printed?" "is the arena paying for itself?" and "why did the girls figure skating club in Langley get 24 hours of prime time and the girls ringette group can only get one and a quarter hour of evening ice time a week?" The article reports that no one had these answers ready because no officials from the arena, the City Council, or the arena committee was there except for "70 more or less uptight parents and brave Merv Hunter (Langley City Alderman)." Eileen Carpenter told the Aldergrove Star that "the Langley ringette group (girl's ice hockey) had originally been promised five hours of ice time a week in the public rink in south Langley. However her group ended up with one evening a week, Tuesday night from 8 to 9:15pm, while the figure skaters were for some mysterious reason allocated a total of 24 hours a week, morning and afternoon hours." There are about 100 girls participating in figure skating paying $48 each for use of the public facility, according to Eileen Carpenter. As a contrast to this, Eileen pointed out that 363 girls had registered for ringette and 280 of those had paid registration fees. 1/3 of the girls were from Langley and 2/3 were from Aldergrove and Fort Langley. "If it wasn't because of the Aldergrove private rink and the fact that they honored their early commitment, there wouldn't be any ringette in Langley." said Eileen. Parents living in Langley are still upset that their girls will have to be taken to Aldergrove for every single practice and game. They've tried to get at least two hours weekly at the Brookswood rink (Langley Civic Arena) but this was not happening. The article ends with Eileen's words: "All we want is an answer to our questions - and two hours of weekly time." CHARGES UNFOUNDED Following the original article, is another article where the Langley arena manager Gerry Thompson says that the charges by the parent group are unfounded. Thompson told the newspaper that the ringette group did not make reservations on time. "The group was still organizing at the time when we sold our ice." As a result, all of the good ice time was sold to minor hockey, girls' figure skating and the Langley Lords. None of those organizations were interested in selling their ice to the "girls ice hockey teams." Thompson told the paper that he will try once more to negotiate an agreement between the arena committee, the figure skaters, and the "ringette people".
