Title A name given to the resource Yvonne Johnson Collection Description An account of the resource The collection was compiled by Yvonne Johnson (née Devuyst) of Langley, BC. Yvonne began playing ringette in Aldergrove with the Langley Municipality Ringette league in January of 1974 —British Columbia's inaugural ringette season. Since 1974, Yvonne has not missed registering for a single year of ringette and is still playing ringette today, 50 years later. This makes Yvonne arguably the longest consecutive playing ringette athlete in the world. Yvonne played primarily a goaltender until 1980, before switching to defence and playing goal from time to time. When the Langley Municipal Ringette league split into the Langley Ringette Association and the Aldergrove Ringette Association (1975), Yvonne played with the Langley Ringette Association. She then played for Fraser Valley Ringette when when the Langley and Aldergrove Ringette Associations amalgamated in 1995. In 1982, Yvonne was selected to represent BC at the Canadian Ringette Nationals in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She would go on to represent BC at five national championships. Yvonne served as a head instructor for many ringette schools and camps throughout BC for more than 15 years, including Camp Cheekeye, the first overnight ringette camp held in the province, and the long running Osoyoos Ringette School. Yvonne participated in an exchange program with a synchronized swim team from Hull, Québec that saw a large group of ringette players from BC visit and billed with a group of swim team members from Hull, and vice-versa. Other activities on a national level that Yvonne was a part of include assisting with two Ringette Canada publications while representing BC on the Ringette Canada Sport Development and the Safety and Equipment Committee over two years. In 1984, Yvonne began her coaching career when she was 18 and took a team to Fraser Lake for a friendship tournament. In 1990, she assisted with the Lower Mainland Jr. All-Star (AA) team and she continued to coach through the years, including her grandchildren. As an administrator, Yvonne was a board member of the Langley Ringette Association, the Fraser Valley Ringette Association, the BC Ringette Association, and the Chilliwack Ringette Association, serving many roles on the executive. Today, Yvonne plays for the Chilliwack Ringette Association and continues to volunteer with the Michelle Vandale Memorial Spirit of Winter Tournament Committee where she also chairs the tournament's scholarship committee. And, is currently serving as the Membership Coordinator for the West Coast Ringette Historical Society. Yvonne was inducted into the Ringette BC Hall of Fame in the builder category in 2023. Description An account of the resource Newspaper clipping from the Aldergrove Star newspaper entitled "Just what is Ringette?" that was published on October 17, 1973. The article speaks to a survey sent out by the (Langley) Recreation Commission to parents and students at Langley schools. The article states that the survey did not include enough information about the game of ringette and that the Commission has been flooded with phone calls regarding the nature of the ice sport. As a result, the Commission is visiting all of the Langley schools where they are talking to all of the girls about ringette, while passing out registration forms. The Commission is asking the parents to co-operate by returning the forms to the schools as quickly as possible. They are also planning another public meeting involving the parents so that they can provide additional information and receive community input into the project. The fee for the season is $10 which covers insurance and registration. The article states that no girl will be turned away, however. Title A name given to the resource Yvonne Johnson Collection Description An account of the resource The collection was compiled by Yvonne Johnson (née Devuyst) of Langley, BC. Yvonne began playing ringette in Aldergrove with the Langley Municipality Ringette league in January of 1974 —British Columbia's inaugural ringette season. Since 1974, Yvonne has not missed registering for a single year of ringette and is still playing ringette today, 50 years later. This makes Yvonne arguably the longest consecutive playing ringette athlete in the world. Yvonne played primarily a goaltender until 1980, before switching to defence and playing goal from time to time. When the Langley Municipal Ringette league split into the Langley Ringette Association and the Aldergrove Ringette Association (1975), Yvonne played with the Langley Ringette Association. She then played for Fraser Valley Ringette when when the Langley and Aldergrove Ringette Associations amalgamated in 1995. In 1982, Yvonne was selected to represent BC at the Canadian Ringette Nationals in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She would go on to represent BC at five national championships. Yvonne served as a head instructor for many ringette schools and camps throughout BC for more than 15 years, including Camp Cheekeye, the first overnight ringette camp held in the province, and the long running Osoyoos Ringette School. Yvonne participated in an exchange program with a synchronized swim team from Hull, Québec that saw a large group of ringette players from BC visit and billed with a group of swim team members from Hull, and vice-versa. Other activities on a national level that Yvonne was a part of include assisting with two Ringette Canada publications while representing BC on the Ringette Canada Sport Development and the Safety and Equipment Committee over two years. In 1984, Yvonne began her coaching career when she was 18 and took a team to Fraser Lake for a friendship tournament. In 1990, she assisted with the Lower Mainland Jr. All-Star (AA) team and she continued to coach through the years, including her grandchildren. As an administrator, Yvonne was a board member of the Langley Ringette Association, the Fraser Valley Ringette Association, the BC Ringette Association, and the Chilliwack Ringette Association, serving many roles on the executive. Today, Yvonne plays for the Chilliwack Ringette Association and continues to volunteer with the Michelle Vandale Memorial Spirit of Winter Tournament Committee where she also chairs the tournament's scholarship committee. And, is currently serving as the Membership Coordinator for the West Coast Ringette Historical Society. Yvonne was inducted into the Ringette BC Hall of Fame in the builder category in 2023. Title A name given to the resource Beverley Ann Felske Collection Description An account of the resource The collection was compiled by Beverley Ann Felske (Evans) (July 13, 1938 —December 12, 2020). Beverley (Bev) Felske was a founding Director on the inaugural board of directors for the British Columbia Ringette Association, which introduced ringette to the province. Bev was born in Mountain Park, Alberta, later residing in Murrayville (Langley), BC. She went on to become a longtime Port Coquitlam resident for 57 years. Bev had a career as an education assistant and science lab technician for the Richmond School Board. She was predeceased by her husband Melvin Harold Felske (May 5, 1933 – Sept. 18, 2012), whom she was married to for 49 years. Melvin was involved in Port Coquitlam (Poco) minor sports as a hockey, ringette and softball coach. In addition to being involved with the BC Ringette Association, Bev served many roles, including President and co-founder with the Port Coquitlam Ringette Association, the BC Snowmobile Federation, and ATV BC, which she also co-founded. Bev's passions including ensure that girls had an ice sport to play; advocating for trails to ride; and passing legislation for licensing and registration of ATV’s in our province. Bev and Melvin spent many happy years traveling the province and beyond in their motorhome and snow birding in Palm Springs, CA. Bev Felkse was inducted into the Ringette Canada Hall of Fame on December 22, 2022 and the BC Sports Hall of Fame in November 2023 as a Builder-Coach. Bev is the first person from the sport of ringette inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY The material was collected by Bev Felske and passed onto Ringette BC in 2020 after her death. The material was donated to the West Coast Ringette Historical Society in 2021.
