The article is about the new season of ringette taking place in Chilliwack and about the sport of ringette generally. The article explains that ringette has a ten year history with Chilliwack entering its third season of competitive play. Coach Mike McAstocker states that ringette "is one of the fastest-growing sports for girls in Chilliwack." He goes on to say that "many new teams are expected to sign up for the new season." Chilliwack's association includes teams for all ages groups from seven years to women over 30. Registration details are provided in the article. The article explains that ringette is a team-oriented sport played on ice that incorporates the concepts of many sports with several elements of its own. "The ring must be passed over the blue lines, necessitating co-ordinated team effort. Each game consists of two, 15-minute, stop-time halves." McAstocker states that the intention of Chilliwack Ringette is to offer teams for girls ages 7 to 15, however would attempt to add additional ice if there are interests from other age groups. The article summarizes a ringette game between Squamish and an Abbotsford/Chilliwack team that was played on November 23. In the tween B game, Squamish beat Abbywack 5-1. According to Jack Baillie, a team spokesperson, "the Squamish girls were bigger, better skaters and more experienced in the skills of ringette." He goes on to say that the Chilliwack/Abbotsford players have just learned the sport. Title A name given to the resource Ringette player goes national Description An account of the resource Article published in the Chilliwack Progress newspaper on January 15, 1986 written by Robert Brown entitled: "Ringette player goes national." The article is about the first player from Chilliwack to play in a national competition. 14-year old Renae Stevenson who is a grade 9 student at Sardis Secondary was selected for the BC Ringette All-Star team after trying out in December. The team will compete at the national championships in Regina, April 1-6. The team will prepare by travelling to Winnipeg for a tournament on February 20-23. The article goes one to say that Stevenson is seeking sponsorships to fund her travel. BC Ringette is able to issue official receipts for donations. Renae Stevenson was the first girl in Chilliwack to play organized minor hockey on boys' teams when she was six years old. She started in figure skating before playing hockey. She commented: "I find ringette fun because control of the ring is so much easier than with a puck. We lived in Sparwood for a year. I made the rep hockey team but was cut because I was a girl." The article also speaks to the Chilliwack ringette team's need for players. Coach Mike McAstocker is looking for players aged 11 and over. "We are hoping to get 60-80 girls to register for next season when we hold registration in early April for girls aged 7 to 17 in five playing categories. If we can get full teams we will be able to enter a Fraser Valley League in each category instead of playing exhibition games." He goes on to say the association is seeking sponsors to help purchase uniforms and equipment. For $100 per sponsor, business names will appear on uniforms. Chilliwack ringette practices are held at Vedder Twin Rinks Fridays 4:30-5:30pm with games on Saturdays 4 to 5pm. On January 24 and 25 the Chilliwack team will play exhibition games at Princeton and Osoyoos.
